More durable, safer and better coatings for batteries

Specialist UV coatings printed onto new generation batteries for electric cars, energy storage and other applications, produce a functional layer which provides shear strength and electrical isolation

Thanks to Xaar's Ultra High Viscosity Technology, Xaar eX printhead can jet up to 100 cPs, the highest in current piezo based inkjet solution.

This unique technology enables fluid manufacturers to develop formulations that can deliver improved UV coatings performance, including mechanical robustness, shear and dielectric strength as well as isolation performance.

Ultra High Viscosity Technology makes it possible to jet extra thick coatings for more durability and overall better coating performance.

Special fluids and waveform

Unique waveform and fluids specifically developed for coating new generation batteries

Ultra High Viscosity Technology

Viscosities of up to 100cP can be jetted, for delivering improved coatings performance, including mechanical robustness, shear and dielectric strength as well as isolation performance

Print uniformity

Xaar AcuChp and TAM ensure uniformity across a single printhead and from one printhead to another for a uniform thickness required by new generation battery manufacturers

Print in any orientation

Prints reliably in vertical or horizontal modes, or dynamically on a robot arm

Sureflow ultra-sonic self-cleaning

Clear and prevent nozzle blockages without the need to remove the printhead, maximising uptime for optimum productivity

Flexible drop sizes

XaarDot provides different drop sizes from greyscale technology to optimise coverage and print quality

Special waveform and fluids

Optimised print quality

Bespoke waveforms are tailored to the specific characteristics of the high-viscosity coatings used in new generation batteries, ensuring optimal drop formation and placement. This leads to superior print quality with uniform coating layers. Common print defects which might occur are avoided.

Enhanced reliability

Customized waveforms also enhance the reliability of the printing process, maximising uptime and minimising maintenance costs.

Improved coating adhesion and battery performance

By fine-tuning the waveform parameters, adhesion of the coating to the substrate is optimised. This is essential for the electrical and mechanical integrity of new generation batteries and consequently helps to improve battery performance, durability and lifespan.

Warranty compliance

Using waveforms specifically designed for the fluid ensures that the printhead operates within its intended parameters, which is a requirement for maintaining printhead warranties and means print performance over time is consistent.

Reliably print fluids up to 100 cP at jetting temperature

Xaar’s Ultra High Viscosity Technology allows you to reliably print fluids around 100 centipoises (cP) at jetting temperature, (approx. 1000cP at ambient temperature) which is well beyond average jetting capabilities of 10-12cP.

Ultra High Viscosity Technology is available across many of Xaar’s printheads including the Xaar Nitrox, the Xaar 50x series, and Xaar 2002. Find out more here.

Why is this only possible with Xaar printheads?

  • Xaar printheads have a unique open architecture which enables the flow of fluids freely through the printheads
  • Xaar’s unrivalled TF Technology ink recirculation ensures highly reliable jetting
  • The Xaar actuator (the ‘engine’ of the printhead) is extremely efficient in the way it operates
  • Specialist waveforms have been developed for applications where highly viscous fluids will be printed
