Purpose of Role
Manage the Applications Development team within R&D. Lead the R&D activity related to proactive solution development within new target applications.
Build applications knowledge, capacity and capability within the Applications Development team in support of our 3-year plan.
Proactively research into new targeted applications such that the team become subject matter experts within Xaar.
Represent Xaar externally to gather information about our target applications and communicate to the external world about our (demonstrated and proven) application relevant USPs.
Scale
The role is likely to involve line management of a team of five to ten people. The role will also be responsible for maintaining equipment worth hundreds of thousands of pounds whilst specifying new equipment of similar value.
Freedom to make decisions
The role will line manage the personnel within the team, own the working processes which the team follow, maintain the equipment owned by the team.
The role will, whilst working with project managers, define R&D projects within the agreed targeted applications and steer the technical aspects of this work to ensure that the team run successful, and application relevant, projects.
The role will work closely with the Commercial team to ensure the ongoing work is well aligned with the business commercial priorities.
The role will proactively foster collaboration between R&D and other non-R&D functions (Field Applications, Product Management, Business Development) to support knowledge sharing.
The role will work closely with the Commercial team, the Technology team, and other R&D teams, to identify new industry sectors and applications which our technology could be applicable to.
Complexity
- The role will be required to work with, and clearly communicate to, multiple functional areas and stakeholders – some non-technical.
- The role will need to balance short term active project demands with the need for longer term new application planning and thinking.
- The role will need to quickly become a technical expert on industries likely to be new to Xaar.
Planning horizon
- Mostly working to a set of annual targets related to approved projects
- Contribute to the organisational 3-year plan – bringing new application concepts to the team for review and discussion.
Key Accountabilities
On a typical day you’ll be expected to:
- Line manage the Application Development team members. Develop a positive team culture in line with the Group’s values and behaviours.
- Technically steer R&D Projects related to new application development, proving and demonstration
- Stay abreast of technical developments within the inkjet industry
- Support and maintain the Application Development team equipment
- Support the Commercial team with application knowledge
- Communicate with new and existing customers
